Shape a sustainable future: engage in the development of a PEFCR for Space!

PEFCR

Due to unforeseen technical issues, the deadline for expressing interest in participating in the PEFCR for Space has been extended.

📅 New Deadline: Monday, 14 October, 12:00 CET

On 11 September 2024, the European Commission's Directorate-General for Defense Industry and Space (DG DEFIS) kicked-off a 30-month project to develop Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCRs) and Environmental Footprint (EF) compliant datasets, specific for the space sector. This marks a significant step towards enhancing the sustainability of space-related activities, aligned with the EU's commitment to promoting environmental responsibility across industries.

The development of a space PEFCR introduces a standardised approach for assessing and reporting environmental impacts within the space industry, addressing the unique challenges of complex supply chains and advanced technologies. With the EF method, companies will be able to rely on scientifically grounded, verifiable data to substantiate their environmental claims, reducing the risk of greenwashing and enhancing transparency.

Stakeholders from across the space sector, environmental organizations, and academic institutions are encouraged to participate in this collaborative process. This is a unique opportunity to directly influence how environmental footprint assessments for space activities are shaped and standardised.

How to get Involved?

Participation in the space PEFCR development process is voluntary. To express your interest, simply fill out the form available here: “Call for Expression of Interest” (EU survey). The closing date of the open call for expression of interest is on 11 October 2024. You are welcome to promote this opportunity within your network.

By engaging in this project, stakeholders can contribute to the development of sustainable practices in the space sector and ensuring a greener future for the space sector.
