Copernicus is Europe's Eyes On Earth
We live in a world characterised by overwhelming environmental challenges. We must try to tackle the effects of global warming, the problems created by both overpopulation and overconsumption, and the depletion of natural resources. One will wonder: how? Space has the answer to this question.
Looking after our planet from (high) above!
Copernicus is the EU Earth Observation Programme looking at our planet and its environment to benefit all European citizens.
Copernicus consists of a series of satellites called the ''Sentinels'' which orbit the Earth and ''take'' high-resolution pictures of our planet. Together with measurements from instruments on the seas, land, or in the air, Copernicus generates precious information about the state of our planet and delivers it for free to public authorities and private companies.
But what exactly can Copernicus do?
Copernicus delivers this wealth of information through a set of six thematic services. Among others Copernicus:
- monitors ocean, coastal areas, and forests to limit the damage from the threat of floods, fires, and earthquakes
- evaluates the melting of the polar ice cap in the Arctic as a result of temperature increases due to global warming.
- determines the quality of air and water that affects our health
- analyses atmospheric composition and detects the content of aerosols that destroy the ozone layer
