Sustainable Finance for the Space Sector

The European sustainable finance framework seeks to mobilise investment in support of climate and environmental objectives. For the space sector, this requires a clear understanding of its financing needs, technological and operational characteristics, sustainability performance, data availability and the conditions needed to attract long-term investment.

The European Commission is organising a workshop bringing together representatives from the sustainable finance community and the space ecosystem. The event will explore how sustainable finance frameworks and investment practices can support European space activities, taking account of the sector’s high upfront capital requirements, long development cycles, strategic dependencies and environmental impacts.

The workshop will provide a forum for evidence-based discussion on market and investment conditions, policy alignment, and the role of public and private finance. It will also consider the environmental performance of space activities and the contribution of space-based services and infrastructure to climate action, environmental monitoring, disaster resilience, resource management and industrial innovation.

Objectives

• promote early dialogue between sustainable finance experts and the space sector
• collect sector-specific evidence on financing needs, sustainability risks and investment conditions
• examine how sustainable finance frameworks and investment practices may support space activities
• identify gaps in definitions, metrics, data, reporting and verification
• explore public and private finance instruments that can support investment while safeguarding competitiveness and sustainability
• identify areas where further technical analysis or methodological work may be needed

The workshop is open to participants across the space and sustainable finance ecosystems, including: 

• Financial institutions, investors, venture capital and private equity investors 
• Space manufacturers, launch operators, service providers, and SMEs 
• Sustainable finance, lifecycle assessment and environmental performance experts 
• EU institutions, Member States authorities, public finance actors, national authorities and relevant agencies
