Protecting peace in Europe

With a steadfast commitment to protecting Peace and promoting European values, the Directorate General for Defence Industry and Space is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of all EU citizens. There is clear need to invest more, better, together and European, as a matter of necessity and in a spirit of solidarity.

How?

Following Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing emergency responses, it is now time to move to structural EU Defence readiness to better protect our citizens. The European Commission (DG-DEFIS) has swiftly taken action to address the pressing need for ramping up ammunition production capabilities of Member States. Emergency measures like the Act in Support of Ammunition Production (ASAP) or the European Defence Industry Reinforcement through common Procurement Act (EDIRPA), have enhanced the capacity and efficiency of ammunition manufacturing across Europe. On the other hand, long term initiatives like the European Defence Fund (EDF) , the European Defence Industrial Strategy (EDIS) and the European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP) fortify our collective Defence readiness.

How does this impact me?

EU Citizens benefit from this in many ways: not only do the shaping up of national armies and the strengthening of the competitiveness and innovation of the European defence industry create new opportunities for employment, but it also strengthens the EU's readiness to respond to security threats! The EU’s ability to protect its citizens, its borders and support its neighbours, thus contributing to global security, also depends on the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base ability to deliver the capabilities needed.

Are we keeping up?

In parallel with ramping up ammunition production, fostering Research and Development in Defence technologies is key. To maintain Europe's competitive edge, DG DEFIS channels resources into the development of cutting-edge Defence equipment. This way, by encouraging collaboration and cooperation among Member States, we promote interoperability between National Armed Forces and ensure the evolution of an able European defence technological and industrial base.

The way forward?

As we navigate through an increasingly complex world, the importance of unity and solidarity cannot be overstated. EU Member States need the defence industry to be capable of producing more and faster. This requires more cooperation and collective action as Europeans. In standing together, the EU plays on collective strength to confront challenges and uphold our shared values. Through these initiatives, DG DEFIS’ efforts exemplify the spirit of collaboration and cooperation that define the European project. The European Defence Industrial Strategy (EDIS) and the European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP) will chart our way forward. By working hand in hand, we reaffirm our commitment to Peace, Security, and Prosperity for all!
