500 participants were gathered last weekend for the 5th CASSINI Hackathon on 24-26 March 2023: an intensive working session to solve important societal problems and meeting like-minded young innovators. The theme “Space for Defence & Security” was chosen to reflect the current geopolitical situation and the myriad of challenges facing Europe as the continent seeks to reinforce its security and autonomy.

Across ten European cities, the participants were provided with working premises, coaches and experts, and plenty of catering to help them keep going through the long hours. The ten hackathon locations included Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Romania, and Sweden. Other participants joined remotely from all over Europe.

Among the tools used was geospatial information from Copernicus Earth observation data, Galileo positioning and navigation services, and other data sources. Each of the ten locations chose its winner. These teams will now go through to the Demo Day happening on Thursday 30 March 2023. In this second stage of the competition at European level, the 10 local winners will pitch in front of a professional jury. The top 3 teams will get access to a 6-month mentoring programme to turn their hackathon project into a successful business.

The participants were enthusiastic after a weekend full of fun activities and learned some essential skills to work with EU space data and services. No doubt many of these talented young innovators will go on and start their own companies, or have a great career in the defence & security sector, in corporations or in public authorities.
