Thanks to its capacity to provide users with guaranteed and secure communications, EU GOVSATCOM will be able to support the management and operation of key infrastructures in domains including - but not limited to - diplomatic networks and humanitarian aid (e.g. EU missions and delegations around the world), space (e.g. Galileo and Copernicus), aviation (e.g. Air Traffic Management) and land transport (e.g. Intelligent Transport Systems, Rail Traffic Management).

For diplomatic networks and humanitarian aid actors, which often are the first entities in place to organise a crisis response, having access to communication means fully independent from the hosting States is a major requirement.

For space infrastructure, EU GOVSATCOM could serve two different purposes: to distribute services to end-users and to ensure information exchange within the infrastructure itself.

For transport, EU GOVSATCOM could meet some specific needs of the sector such as the need for secured exchange of data between aircrafts and ground control centres, the need to ensure the safety and security of the critical communication associated with the operations of road transport networks, or the need to increase the capacity and resilience of future railway communication systems.

The monitoring of other types of key infrastructures (e.g. dams, dykes, bridges, power plants) is increasingly relying on automated Machine-to-Machine (M2M) links to retrieve information from on-site sensors. In many cases, the transmission of information could be provided by a satellite communication link.
