European Defence Industry submits 134 joint defence R&D proposals under the European Defence Fund 2022 calls for proposals

EDF 2022 Calls Closure 1

The European defence industry submitted by 24 November 134 proposals for joint defence R&D projects in response to the 2022 calls for proposals under the European Defence Fund, reflecting all the thematic priorities identified by the Member States with the support of the Commission. The calls dedicated to SME support received the highest number of submitted proposals. The Commission services will now do the admissibility and eligibility checks following which the Commission, assisted by independent external experts, will evaluate the proposals in view of awarding more than 920 million euro of EU funding to the best projects. The results of the evaluation are expected by the end of the second quarter of 2023.

Background

The Commission announced the adoption of the second annual work programme of the European Defence Fund (EDF) in May 2022 and opened the calls in June 2022. The EDF 2022 work programme allocated up to a total of €924 million in funding.

The 2022 EDF work programme addresses in total 33 topics structured along eight calls for proposals to kick-start a number of large emblematic projects. It targets relevant defence technologies and capabilities in line with the EU capability priorities commonly agreed by Member States and further elaborated in the Strategic Compass. High-end defence capabilities and enabling technologies are also addressed through different categories of actions. These include inter alia the development of a medium-size tactical cargo aircraft contributing to military mobility, strengthening cyber situational awareness and operations’ capabilities, space-based missile early warning, airborne electronic warfare, collaborative combat for land forces, technologies and components for underwater applications, including underwater manned-unmanned teaming and swarms.
