On 7 November 2023, during the User Consultation Platform organised by the EU Agency for the Space Programme in Sevilla, Spain, the Space Data Association (SDA) presented its prestigious T.S. Kelso award to EU SST.
The SDA presents the T.S. Kelso award annually as a recognition of outstanding contributions to space flight safety. The fact that EU SST has been presented with this award therefore confirms the important work done by the EU SST Partnership and SST Front Desk in keeping space assets safe. With almost 180 organisations and almost 500 satellites relying on EU SST, this award also highlights the quality and reliability that EU SST, a subcomponent of the EU Space Programme, has delivered over the years, and the trust it has earned from its hundreds of users.
Congratulations to our partners at the EU SST on this great achievement!
Background
EU SST is a subcomponent of the Space Situational Awareness (SSA) component of the EU Space Programme. It safeguards space assets, especially EU Space Programme satellites such as Galileo, EGNOS, Copernicus, GOVSATCOM and in the future IRIS², along with the space assets of EU Member States and other space operators.
EU SST uses a network of ground-based sensors capable of surveying and tracking space objects and processing capabilities aimed at improving, operating, and providing data, information and services on space objects orbiting the Earth. This helps to mitigate the risk of a collision between space assets and other spacecraft and debris, in-orbit fragmentations and uncontrolled re-entries of space objects into the Earth’s atmosphere.
