An EU Approach for Space Traffic Management

Commission and High Representative adopt Joint Communication proposing ways to address increasing space congestion

On 15 February 2022, the European Commission and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy adopted the Joint Communication on an EU approach for Space Traffic Management. Highlighting the ever-increasing rise of space activities and space debris, this first-ever Joint Communication in the field of space stresses the compelling need to act, and to act collectively.

To do so, the Joint Communication proposes ten actions along four avenues i.e.

  1. assessing the STM requirements and impacts for the EU,
  2. enhancing EU operational capabilities to support STM,
  3. fostering STM regulatory aspects, and
  4. promoting the EU STM approach globally.

In the spirit of acting collectively, DG DEFIS on behalf of the Commission and EEAS on behalf of the High Representative, will reach out to their partners to implement the ten actions of the EU approach to STM over the coming months and years.
