
The European Commission, as Programme Manager of the EU Space Programme, announces a major milestone for EGNOS, Europe’s satellite-based augmentation system. On 25 August 2025, the GEO-3 satellite Eutelsat 5 West B officially transitioned from test to operational status, broadcasting the EGNOS Signal-in-Space.
This upgrade forms part of the EGNOS System Release 2.4.3, which deployment started in August 2025. The system release ensures that EGNOS continues to provide reliable and uninterrupted services while paving the way towards its future evolution, including the next-generation EGNOS V3.
Key updates to the EGNOS space segment
- 25 August 2025: GEO-3 Eutelsat 5 West B transitioned from test to operational status.
- 5 September 2025: GEO-2 ASTRA 5-B (PRN 123) will move to test status.
Following this “GEO swap”, the EGNOS space segment will consist of GEO-1 and GEO-3 as operational satellites, with GEO-2 continuing in a test role. Importantly, service continuity across the EGNOS coverage area is not affected.
Preparing for the future of EGNOS
The Commission works closely with its operational agency, EUSPA, to manage upgrades and ensure the robustness of EGNOS services. Integrating GEO-3 into the operational platform is a key step in guaranteeing reliability for users across Europe, particularly in safety-critical sectors such as aviation.
Looking ahead, the deployment of EGNOS V3 will introduce enhanced performance, robustness, and dual-frequency multi-constellation capabilities, further strengthening Europe’s satellite navigation infrastructure.
