A common framework for Environmental Footprint studies of European space activities

Bumper SCI 003

With the publication of the European green deal, the European Commission set out the objective to make Europe the first climate neutral continent. The aim is to make all sectors of the EU fit to meet this challenge, including the EU space sector.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is recognized as the most appropriate methodology to measure and act upon environmental impacts. The European Space Agency (ESA) is using LCA in space projects and technologies and has published the first space specific LCA Handbook in 2016.  However, there is currently no commonly agreed sector-specific methodology, as well there is lack of data, and several important environmental aspects are not covered by a common standard LCA impact assessment method.

The European Commission Directorate General Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS), the European Space Agency and the European Union Space Agency y (EUSPA), invite you to help defining a shared ambition regarding further developments of life cycle environmental footprint of European space activities and product-specific environmental footprint category rules.

To this end, the first of 3 consultations workshops will take place on 30 of June, from 9:30 to 16:30, via webex. You can register for the workshop by 27 June COB and well find more details on the workshop content here.

The event is jointly organised by the European Commission, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the EU Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA).
