5th STM main group meeting: Member States and co-chairs discuss progress on implementing the EU approach on space traffic management

5th STM main group meeting

In its 5th meeting on 8 June 2026, the STM main group, co-chaired by DG DEFIS and EEAS, was debriefed on the latest activities of the STM subgroups followed up by a comprehensive overview of the work of STM subgroup 1 which has been compiling and aggregating civilian and military STM requirements outlined in the Joint Communication. STM main group members also learned about the nuances between ‘managing’ and ‘coordinating’ space traffic and other STM-related topics. 

STM main group members were pleased to see progress and confirmed that it helps to ensure that the EU approach on STM enhances EU capabilities and strategic autonomy and fosters EU competitiveness for the space surveillance sector and space operators alike.

The STM main group, co-chaired by DG DEFIS and EEAS, gathers representatives from EU Member States and EDA and steers the overall implementation of the EU approach to STM as outlined in the Joint Communication. It also oversees the work of the STM subgroups
